Is there anything obvious im missing here to get the screen to initiate at login? If it can't, then my set up is pretty much useless!

Based on your description, I believe there are three things to double-check:
1. Ensure that the DisplayLink Manager Application is configured to startup automatically, as described here -->

2. Ensure that 'Login screen extension' is installed, as described here -->

3. If FileVault encryption is turned on for the startup disk in your Mac, turn it off. If FileVault is enabled, it can prevent the Login screen extension from starting. More information on FileVault is here -->
