ThinkPad Hybrid USB-C with USB-A Dock

I am experiencing issues connecting via a ThinkPad Hybrid USB-C with USB-A dock.

The „first connection of the day“ always fails, i.e. I cannot use the external display connected to the dock. When I restart the dock (i.e. unplug it and plug it again in from power) the dock and the display work fine.

Any idea what could cause this?
