Default Windows 8.1 "USB device not recognized"

Hi, I bought an "ETEKCITY USB 2.0 UGA" multi-display adapter. It arrived in the mail today, I proceeded to un-box and run the install disk. It said windows 8 on the installer, so I assumed it would work fine with windows 8.1. The computer I am running on is a "HP ENVY DV6", and all the device tells me is "USB device not recognized" when I plug it in. So I began to explore the files of the cd, I found a "Drivers update link" inside the "Drivers_USB2.0" folder. It led me HERE There I see some information about 8.1

"Upgrading to Windows 8.1?

DisplayLink recommends v7.4 software (or later) on Windows 8.1.

If you are upgrading from Windows 8 to Windows 8.1, please refer to this article BEFORE upgrading to Windows 8.1 to make the experience as smooth as possible."

I click this article and it brings me to a page that says quite a bit. Long story short, this is my moms laptop and it came with Windows 8, but she updated to 8.1 prior to even having this device. So I follow the "I have upgraded to Windows 8.1, but did not upgrade to v7.4 software first. What do I do?", and I get the same error. Then I tried "I've tried installing the latest software and I still cannot get my DisplayLink devices to work on Windows 8.1", and I am getting the same error.

Any ideas? Please help, if you need more information don't hesitate to ask.

Hi,

It's possible that the drivers have been loaded but not installed.

In Device Manager is there an entry called "USB Display Adapters"?
If not do you see entries with a yellow bang against them under "Other devices"?

Please attach the output of this tool:

Thanks,
James
