Turning off secure boot in the BIOS solved the problem. I will probably try signing the driver later.
The first time the system came up after secure boot was turned off, I got the following error when I tried to configure the display settings. Cannot open “Display” settings, error “Could not get screen information” Doing the following -- sudo apt-get install --reinstall ubuntu-desktop -- and then rebooting solved that problem. Below is the output from lsusb. I believe I saw two DisplayLink drivers when I used the old driver with Ubuntu 15.10. algotrader@algotrader-XPS-13-9350:~$ lsusb Bus 002 Device 003: ID 17e9:436c DisplayLink Bus 002 Device 002: ID 05e3:0612 Genesys Logic, Inc.
