I'm noticing now that there are rarely any displays under 22" that offer a resolution of 1080+. I think that in reality, this is going to be the main issue for manufacturers making portable displays of any kind -- if there's little demand for such extraordinary pixel density, then they simply won't be made.

Having said that -- rumours [such as they are] suggest that a 2012-Q2 MacBook Pro might support a 2880x1800 screen in either their 17" or 15" model. If Apple makes this happen, and the industry adopts -- then we might start seeing portable monitors with comparable resolution and pixel density.

(N.B.: I said 1800 not 1080.)
