Plugged in & connected but showing blank screen.

I am running a 2012 Macbook Pro 13inch with 10.7.4. I have the 1.7 driver installed. I've tried different screens & DVI cables but still shows a blank screen. The monitor seems to recognise that it's connected but the Mac doesn't show the display. Any idea what the issue could be? Any specific troubleshooting steps I can follow?
