Plugged in & connected but showing blank screen.

I have the 2011 macbook pro 13 inch with a dell utrasharp u2212hm 21.5 inch monitor. My mac sees the monitor but the monitor is black even though it is on. When I turn the monitor off and then back on the monitor gives me the message "entering power save mode" and thens goes completely black. I down loaded the 1.8 driver.
