Default USB speaker intermittently disappears from Mac when plugged into powered DisplayLink

Hey everyone,

I’m running into a frustrating intermittent issue with my Mac setup and am hoping someone has solved this before.
I have a DisplayLink adapter/docking station that is plugged directly into a wall outlet for power. Plugged into one of the USB ports on the dock is an external USB speaker.
The issue: The speaker works sometimes, but randomly stops working completely.
When it cuts out:
  • The speaker still has physical power (lights are on).
  • It completely disappears from System Settings > Sound > Output.
  • Crucially, it vanishes entirely from System Information > USB tree (it's not recognised at the hardware level at all).
A simple unplug and replug of the main dock cable does not bring it back.
Since the dock is wall-powered, I don't think it's a power starvation issue. When it drops, macOS seems to completely halt communication with that USB sub-hub on the dock, even though the dock itself is still powered.
Has anyone dealt with USB audio devices dropping off DisplayLink hubs like this? Is there a known macOS privacy setting or driver conflict causing this?

Any help or troubleshooting steps would be greatly appreciated!

DisplayLink Model: Targus DOCK190
Speaker Model: Dell AC511
