This is usually monitor-dependent. Second, Apple doesn't obey standards, this is why they're all proprietary. I've never seen 1600x1024 supported by VESA. It's either 1600x1200 or 1680x1050.

Like, this adapter I have works at 1366x768 on one TV over HDMI, but on another, that resolution isn't available. If your display device isn't showing that VESA standard resolution to the DisplayLink chip in the adapter, no Operation System will know.

Although, it could be the DisplayLink drivers as well :P. I saw the other posts, just giving you a reference.
