I can't install Displaylink Core Software as it says it's already installed, it's not

Hello billybonk,

It is possible that for some reason 6.1 software has not been uninstalled from your PC properly.

I see you mentioned using DisplayLink cleaner. Just to double check, could you please confirm you have downloaded and run the tool linked in this article:
