Display not detected on Ubuntu 14.04.3

Thanks for your reply. Unfortunately the USB cable can't be replaced (we're using this adapter). However, we did manage to get it working on a different machine, which as far as I can tell is similar except in kernel version (3.16). We've tried using all USB ports but none of them work. Is there anything else we could try?
