News: I kind of managed to get it to work again. When I plugged my Dell D3100 in a USB 2.0 port, it all started to work again. I suspect that before updating Ubuntu, my kernel thought that every port on my notebook (Dell Inspiron 13 7348) were USB 2.0. Now the two ports on the left side are being detected as USB 3.0. But, of course, this situation is suboptimal. Under load, my display is laggy and sometimes the image quality decays. I think this is the works of some kind of compression algorithm compensating the lack of bandwidth of the USB 2.0 connection. Anyone got it to work in a USB 3.0 port?

I tried again with a working adapter, and it still doesn't work, so we can rule out HW. What else?
