Perhaps something changed in OSX then with a latest update.. I'm glad I'm not the only one experiencing this.

Like you, I can't open Activity Monitor or it opens but then can't refresh itself to get a process list. I've managed to open terminal and run top but that doesn't show any numbered processes misbehaving - just 0% idle CPU - then terminal stops being able to accept text input

I've had at least three very severe slowdowns in the last 10 days. Nothing usable really, had to leave the Mac alone for 3-5 minutes before it became usable again.
In two cases when using Parallels, in another case just browsing with Safari. No external screens connected.
Don't have a theory yet, the CPU did not seem to be the problem.

Will investigate further if it happens again. Thing is, I don't like to open Parallels at all but if it triggers the problem I'll have to.
