Asus MB169+ only can use a mirror

Every time I try to connect to my Asus 169B+ it's a new adventure. Most of the time it is in mirror displays mode, even when I ask for (and it allows me to) go into Extend Displays mode. Occasionally, Extend Displays does work.

I am running 10.13.6 on both my Macbook Pro and my Macbook Air. As I type this, Extend display is working on the Air but not on the Pro.
