I'm in the same position as Laho.

The Apple Thunderbolt monitors have 3 high-speed USB 2.0 ports as well as a Thunderbolt port - would a USB to HDMI or Thunderbolt to HDMI adapter allow DisplayLink to work?

No, the Apple monitor would have to have one of the aforementioned video ports available to use it with DisplayLink powered dock/adapter.
