Virtual MAC address
A number of devices are now coming out with Virtual MACs such as Dell XPS when these devices are attached to docks running DisplayLink this Virtual MAC overwrites the MAC address of the dock. Thus if a dock has been given a specific IP registered in dhcp these devices (with Virtual MACs) do not get that IP address because the MAC has changed.
Is the away in DisplayLink that can prevent this? We have StarTech USB Ethernet adapters that are not affected by this and always give their MAC to the dhcp server not the Virtual MAC. Dell call this feature MAC Address pass through http://www.dell.com/support/article/...type-c?lang=en |

Yes, this is expected behaviour and has been implemented since 8.1.
It cannot be turned off as it is for security to make sure you cannot plug any device into a dock and get on the network, if you're using MAC based security. Allowing you to turn it off would put a back door into this. You should register the virtual MAC addresses on the devices rather than the dock MAC address and then you know it is the MACHINE and not the DOCK that has the IP address. Wim |
