DisplayLink relentlessly wants to install and change display

We have HP Envy 14 and purchased the USB notebook port replicator to free up USB ports. When the port in connected to the laptop DisplayLink wants to install software. When installed, DisplayLink changes to the display (laptop display - no external separate monitor) to two displays and all the icons disappear. We have to disconnect the replicator port and uninstall DisplayLink. Next day DisplayLink tries installing again.

The laptop will be going to college in the fall and we anticipated purchasing a monitor for a larger display area so think the software is a good option.

Can someone steer us in the right direction?
