Default Mint 18.1 / Unbuntu 16.10 (X64) and ASUS MB168B

I have purchased recently an ASUS: MB168B. I have loaded the latest DisplayLink drivers per the webpage directions. 1.2.65. Either one of two things happen.

1) I plug the monitor into a USB3 port on the Lenovo Yoga 11e, it powers on (see the ASUS splash screen) then goes black.

2) the screen powers on (like option 1), then it flashes as it tries to sync/discover the screen. In the process the main screen flashes/flickers too. It never figures out what to do with the usb monitor. Every so often it shows the desktop (like I would expect) but within a second or two it flashes and it is gone.

Is it a driver issue or do I have a bad monitor?

attach is the support logs.
