Post Black screens - High Sierra on MacBook Air

I have been running a Plugable USB 3.0 docking station and two Dell monitors with my MacBook Air (13 inch, early 2015) for a year or so without much issue. After the recent update to High Sierra 10.13.1, I can't get it to function. When I plug it in to the usb 3.0 port both monitors AND the MacBook screen go black. When I subsequently unplug it, the MacBook is back to the user login page. I installed the latest driver from the display link website – no change. I uninstalled the driver and reinstalled it – no change. Then I tried the kernel extension process detailed at

The prompt did not show up (never has) so I went through preferences into privacy and security as directed – there is no message that an extension has been blocked so I can’t click “allow”. That part makes sense as the display link software was already in my Air when the upgrade to High Sierra was completed so the kernel extension must have been allowed. So, why are my screens still black?

As it is I cannot use the docking station and I am not in a position to roll back to an earlier version of MacOS. Looking for suggestions.
