Default Driver Installer Crashing Immediately After Launching

NOTE: This issue has been solved. Please read further to find the solution if you are experiencing the same issue

Hi all,

I'm having trouble getting the DisplayLink drivers to install on my computer - an HP Pavilion 23 all in one PC running Windows 8.1. After launching the installer, I get the UAC permissions pop-up, press yes, and a window showing a progress bar opens and closes almost instantaneously - and that's it. The DisplayLink software does not show up in the program listing or services window.

I've tried a couple of the standard things to get it install properly, but none of them have worked; this includes rebooting, running as administrator, Windows 7 compatibility, disabling antivirus, safe mode (this gave an error regarding graphics card drivers that I believe may just be a limitation of safe mode). I've ran the cleaner utility for the hell of it, though I rightly didn't anticipate that working due to DisplayLink never having been installed before. I don't believe any software associated with Fresco, SMSC, or MCT is installed on the computer.

At this point, I'm completely out of ideas and I've exhausted everything I can find through FAQs and Google - can anyone here help out?

Hi,

As soon as the issue is seen please attach the output of this tool:
http://www.displaylink.com/support/ticket.php?id=269
Once downloaded, please run it and select "Gather Support Information"

When you reply please select "Manage Attachments" from the "Additional Options" section below.

From there select Upload and navigate to the output of the tool which will be in a folder called "DisplayLink Support Files" on your desktop.

Thanks,
James

Hi

I'm both pleased and disheartened to discover this thread. Pleased that I'm not alone, but disheartened that there appears to be no resolution.

I'm experiencing the same issues discussed here; the installation doesn't appear to complete properly, and the "core" application never appears and there is no evidence is has completed properly. I have also run the "cleaner" application, which also closes without any confirmation that it has completed.

Followed all the FAQs on the subject I can find. Tried multiple versions of the installer.

My Spec:

Displaylink USB 3.0 to Display Port Adaptor
  • Dell Laptop i7 Generation 4 (Haswell) with Intel HD4400 Graphics
  • Dell E-Port III Docking Station/Port replicator
  • Windows 8.1 Update 1 (Recently rebuilt, and clean)
  • Native Windows USB 3.0 Extensible host controller + driver (Windows 8.1 Native driver appears to be the ONLY option)
  • Multiple displays already attached
Things I've tried:
  • Attaching direct via back of laptop (No docking station)
  • Attached to the Docking Station USB 3 and USB 2 ports
  • Attached via USB 3 Hub
  • Run cleaner multiple times
  • Used 7.7 M3 and M0 installers

But given the drivers/application are supposed to be installed BEFORE the hardware is connected, what port it's connected to shouldn't make any difference.

I've wasted a day on this, If I don't get this resolved then it's going back to Amazon..

Debug attached also.

Thanks for your help

Hi

After playing with this for another couple of hours, I believe there is more than one issue with the installer.

Plugging in a single USB 3.0 -> Displays two devices in control panel:

After manually unpacking the driver
This device installs ok:

DisplayLink Display Adapter (4301)

USB\VID_17E9&PID_4301&REV_0235&MI_00

This one does not:

DisplayLink Display Adapter (4301)

USB\VID_17E9&PID_4301&REV_0235&MI_02

After Hunting through the DisplayLinkUSB.inf file I realised that there is no description for the device "DisplayLink Display Adapter (4301)"=_Install, USB\VID_17e9&PID_4301&MI_02" So I put one in (and after I disabled driver security) I got both the identified UIDs to install.

However, I still don't get any indication of the adapter in Graphics Control panel, and I still don't have access to the "Core" App, and I still can't use the external driver.

Reading between the lines, it would appear there are versions of hardware on Amazon that are not currently supported by the drivers yet.

Still don't have a good explanation as to why the main app won't work.

Any ideas?

Unfortunate to see that another person is still experiencing this issue. I have not yet found a solution for the problem and still have not heard back from support. Please update this thread if you manage to resolve the issue on your end.
