Unsigned drivers in DisplayLink 7.9 M4
I am unable to successfully install DisplayLink 7.9 M4 due to Windows 7 complaining about unsigned drivers. Installing M3 doesn't give me the same problem.

Hi,
No I cannot install the latest updates for Windows since I am using a corporate computer, and access to windows update is restricted by a group policy. Besides I am not sure I understand how updating windows will solve the problem that DisplayLink are shipping unsigned drivers? Just sign the drivers and release an updated version of the M4 installer. BR, Joel |

Error
Seeing the exact same issue but not on every install. No issue with 7.9M3.

Joel,
DisplayLink drivers are signed. We don't/cannot put unsigned drivers on Windows Update and 7.9 M4 is the same package as used in Windows Update for Windows 10. Our drivers used to be signed TWICE. By us, then by Microsoft. Microsoft advised us to stop signing because their signature was enough. So we did. By updating, you will get Microsoft way of checking digital signatures (certificates most likely) which they probably changed since you last got a cumulative security patch. If we sign, then we hit another Microsoft bug on Windows 10 which forces computers which don't have the zero day package (or later security patch) into recovery mode because the way of checking the signatures has an issue with dates. Error message: Windows requires a digitally signed driver

OK. that explains it. Too bad you cannot give me a KB number to look for as I am unable to update this system by myself and updates are only pushed out by the system administrator.

Hello, update for Windows 7 users. I've asked we re-sign the 7.9 M5 like we did until 7.9 M3.
This means it should work again on outdated Windows 7 installations, provided you could validate DisplayLink certificate before! This means that if you update to Windows 10, you MUST make sure your Windows 10 install is fully up-to-date (TH2 / Build 1511 or later) before you install DisplayLink drivers. Otherwise you'll get to the Windows recovery console because the Windows 10 RTM (TH1) has a bug which cannot validate signature date. You generally don't see that with other drivers because, unlike DisplayLink, they are not loaded during boot. But let me stress it again, DisplayLink drivers have always been signed properly as they wouldn't have been accepted by Microsoft otherwise.

This is good news for us still stuck on Win7. I have actually managed to install M4 now so I guess the latest batch of updates that was pushed to my computer contained that which was missing before.
Now I just hope that all those BSODs will be fixed as well. Perhaps in M5... :-) |

Hi Joel,
I can't see any support ticket with your email address attached to the forum. Have you reported the BSoDs in the past with the .DMP file? It'd be useful to have them to check if we know or not... I mean I prioritise bug fixing based on severity and impact. A BSoD is of the highest severity but I hope you can understand that unless we've seen it during test or it's reported, there are little chances for it to get looked at. Regards, Alban

No I haven't reported any BSODs yet. I haven't really bothered to find out how. I work with software development and testing myself so I fully understand that unless I report it, it might not be fixed. I wasn't really complaining, just expressing my hope that the issues I have are know faults and will be fixed without me reporting anything. :-).
