Default 1080P USB 2.0 to HDMI VGA DVI Multi-Display Adapter Converter Graphics Card

I bought one of these "1080P USB 2.0 to HDMI VGA DVI Multi-Display Adapter Converter Graphics Card UK" (Probably UGA-165) at the good price of £20 including shipping:

The maximum vertical resolution I can get is 1080. it works well on my Android phone with the DisplayLink Presente 4.2 Android app

On my Linux Mint 17.3 the udl driver does not work - giving me only a black screen, however the older udlfb driver does work, but as it does not support xrandr I need an xorg.conf file -- as described on my blog post:
http://blog.sam.liddicott.com/2016/0...l#comment-form

I had tried with just udl (blacklisting or even uninstalling the evdi driver) but it would not work. The frame buffer was created, fbset could be used to set modes, and tools like fbi which display images on the framebuffer operated without complaint -- but nothing was displayed on the monitor.

udlfb "just worked"

[Note: I was running with PCI pass-through on a USB port of an ESXi virtual machine on a Dell server]
