Default Insane CPU Usage

I just ordered a Dell D6000 and installed DisplayLink for this to work on a 2017 MacBook Pro running 10.5.7 and DisplayLink 1.1.0.

Previously I had a Sabrent USB-C > 2 Display Port connector.

The CPU usage of DisplayLink is off the charts. The performance of video through DisplayLink is bad, it gets choppy when the CPU increased to 80%.

I'm highly disappointed and am about to return this because of DisplayLink. Is this to be expected? I see lots of posts talking about high CPU with no real response or fix. It's making my whole computer drag. Even when typing in this form, my typing will fall behind on occasion as the mac's fans spin up to deal with the high CPU.
