Default USB connecting to MBP M1

I have a displaylink 4k/5k adaptor with 6 x USB3 outlets. The adaptor works great to view 2 displays from my M1 MB pro (13" / 2 x USBC ports only). When connecting a thumb drive to any of the USB outlets, all works well but when connecting an external portable hard drive it will not display in finder. It is visible under System Report. Any advice appreciated. Thanks

Notes from the moderator:

- I have moved your post into the Mac section of the forum, given that you are using an Apple Mac system

- DisplayLink makes USB video technology that other companies integrate into their own products. Given your description of the behavior, it does not appear that the problem lies within the DisplayLink portion of your product. Rather, it may lie within the USB hub within the product.

I would suggest testing the USB ports within the product with a different USB device (such as a USB keyboard or mouse) in order to determine if the USB ports are working at any level. If not working as expected, it would be best to contact the manufacturer of the product directly for assistance.
