Question Firmware to fix bricked DL-165 with USB ID 8060?

I've been using 2 DL-165 adapters for a few months on Ubuntu with kernel 3.9.

Today one stopped working. I've tried all the tricks to get it working (plugging it into the USB port without a monitor attached) etc. But it still has the USB ID of 8060.

Can I update the firmware.
This is an expensive brick.

The displaylink KB article says it's the seller's problem, however, the seller on ebay only accepts returns within 30 days.

Displaylink should take responsibility for this and fix it somehow instead of passing the buck?

No, this means the hardware has been incorrectly programmed.

This is not the fault of DisplayLink.
