Default Third Phantom Monitor because of Display Link

using display link 5.6.31870 on an HP elitebook 8560p with an HP USB Media port replicator.

Before installing the displaylink software, windows shows that i have 1 monitor. after installing, windows shows that i have 3 monitors. I actually have 2 monitors at this point. 1 is my laptop screen, 1 is an external display attached to the DVI port of the USB HP media port replicator.

This is a problem because now i can drag windows over onto the phantom monitor and then they are gone from sight completely.
How can i tell windows/displaylink that i only have 1 external monitor attached and not 2?

You should be able to disable this through the Windows Display Properties. What is the ghost monitor, as DisplayLink should have only added 1 additional screen.
