HP3005PR on Windows 7
Hello lads and lasses,
I'm trying to setup an hp3005pr on my laptop. The laptop is running Windows 7. I've tried a lot of things but I can't seem to get it to work. The USB hub works fine, but I can't get anything on the HDMI screen I have connected to the dock. It seems like the GigEthernet doesn't work either. I've tried:
The dock shows up in device manager in Portable Devices but not in display adapters. As a result DisplayLink manager shows a disconnected icon. I ran Windows updates and my system is up-to-date. The intel HD graphics and USB 3.0 host controller drivers are also up-to-date. Attached you'll find the support logs for each of the ports I tested. Any ideas? Thanks in advance for the feedback. Kind regards, ScHAmPi. |

Hi
I've looked at the logs, and these show that no DisplayLink device is being found on the USB bus (see Syetem Details.txt at the bottom of the file). You can check this yourself in device manager using the article below: http://support.displaylink.com/knowl...-at-all-or-i-g Wim |

Thanks for the response Wim.
What do you think causes that? The dock is detected on the laptop because it's shown in dev manager as portable device. I found more details in one of the files in the zip I attached in my first post too (DevManView.html): So the dock is being detected but it's not recognized as a displaylink device? |

Hello Schampi,
You indeed see a mass storage device but no graphics adapter, no Ethernet adapter and no audio driver. HP would have designed their docking station using one of the USB port to embed a USB storage key. It could be the USB 3.0 subsystem which is dead, it could be the cables, it could be the port, it could be an issue with the power supply, a damaged pin... This requires the hardware to get a real root cause. At this stage, I would recommend contacting the manufacturer, HP, for hardware support. There's no DisplayLink chip detected connected to the computer, so Windows doesn't invoke DisplayLink driver. The problem occurs before the driver. Kind regards, and I wish you a prosperous year! Alban

Hello Alban,
Thanks for the response. The HP warranty has run out unfortunately. I'll see if I can find another USB 3 cable. But I guess it has passed on to electronics heaven. Probably not much servicing to do on things like this but at the same time I'm a bit surprised that it died only partially. Kind regards, Brecht. |

Hello Brecht,
If you wish to dig further, I would look at trying a USB 2.0 cable only. Trying devices on the USB hub of the dock as well, would help pinpoint at which level the issue lies. That doesn't mean it would solve the fault, but, for instance, if USB3 is broken, you could force everything to USB2 by using an old printer cable. If the pins are all disconnected, then it will enumerate in USB2. If some channels are broken but still trying to be used, then you get something half broken. USB2 and USB3 are like different channels in the same physical pipe. That's technically wrong as USB3 has extra pins... but code is different, host controller is different, data path is different. Kind regards, Alban

USB3.0 seems to be working, in fact all the usb ports seem to be working.
Here's a screenshot of a tool I found on the internet that reports what USB devices are detected and at which protocol version they're communicating.
Ports 2 & 4 on the USB3.0 hub connected to the laptops root USB 3.0 hub at port 15 are the two USB3.0 ports on the dock. When I connect a network cable to the dock it's LED's light up. Seems like at least the link comes up. |

It is possible indeed that the USB3 subsystem works from what I can see there.
The Ethernet link is negotiated in hardware, the LED blinking means the DisplayLink chip is alive and can talk with the Ethernet PHY. With USB View, you can see there isn't any DisplayLink device present on any port. It would typically be on a USB 3.0 port, for obvious reasons: it can and offers better results. Kind regards, Alban
