Lenovo ThinkPad W520 Windows 8 issue, same dock works with ThinkPad T61 Win 8
I've got a Lenovo ThinkPad W520 laptop, using RTM version of Windows 8 Pro (64 bit) and the new Lenovo video drivers for NVIDIA Quadro 1000M 8/28/2012 9.18.13.614 from:
http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/guid...DocID=UM014961 and using the 7.0 driver for Windows 8 here: http://displaylink.com/support/downloads.php So nothing is beta. This particular system shows the DisplayLink service starting, and Device Manager shows Device ID 17E9 properly according to these articles: http://www.displaylink.org/forum/showthread.php?t=896 http://www.displaylink.com/support/ticket.php?id=323 But I get Device Manager issue with no USB Display device. Instead, I get it showing: Other devices, ThinkPad USB 3.0 Dock with these properties: The drivers for this device are not installed. (Code 28) There is no driver selected for the device information set or element. I have been fighting this issue for a while, and realize I may need to wait for Lenovo to release their own Windows 8 drivers for smoother sailing, but it is strange that the same dock works fine with the same Windows 8 Pro (64 bit) on a ThinkPad T61. In other words, there's some sort of recovery/cleanup that seems to be needed, and hoping I can figure out what that procedure is, short of re-installing Windows 8 entirely. I also discussed this matter over here, in the now-closed forum: http://www.displaylink.org/forum/showthread.php?t=1971 Uninstalling the DisplayLink 7.0 software and rebooting and reinstalling didn't help. Uninstalling the devices through Device Manager didn't help either. Sticking with Discreet video mode in the BIOS didn't help either (since single GPU is recommended since multiple GPUs like Optimus mode can be a problem with DisplayLink). Any ideas? Will post diags below shortly... Last edited by tinkererguy; 10-17-2012 at 03:28 AM. |

Our drivers should work with this. It would be worth cleaning the install and trying again, following this article:
http://kb.displaylink.com/297 Hopefully that will let Windows associate our USB driver with our device. Wim |

Just to re-cap, here's my config:
left monitor 1920x1200, using DVD-D to DVD-D cable from laptop dock center monitor 2560x1440 using DisplayPort to DisplayPort cable from laptop right monitor using Lenovo USB 3.0 dock DVD-D to HDMI 1920x1080 Here's what did work for me: Used the new DisplayLink USB Graphics Software for Windows* V7.0 M2 http://displaylink.com/support/sla.php?fileid=78 And tada, it updated the firmware in the Lenovo dock, and suddenly my 3rd display began working again. Yep, the fix was that easy for me. I also noticed that it only works when my ThinkPad W520 is set to Discreet Graphics mode in the BIOS. So I made sure I'm using all the latest Windows 8 drivers, which are now GA, here: http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/rese...DocID=HT063273 which means NVIDIA video driver 9.18.13.0614 / 9.17.10.2843, but it didn't matter, only Discreet Graphics seems to work with my config, Optimus mode is a no go (only my left and center monitors seen). Annoying this in the Discreet Graphics mode, when my laptop is using its internal screen only, it locks up solid soon after finishing booting Windows 8. This was a problem throughout the betas, and now with the GA Win 8 64 bit and the GA level NVIDIA drivers as well, sigh. But that's a laptop issue, not a DisplayLink issue. Anyhow, this is progress, turns out I didn't have to use the DisplayLink Install Cleaner. Thank you! |

Sigh, soon realized that resuming from suspend usually resulted in BSOD. So did unplugging monitors, then plugging them back in (power strip used when stepping away).
Much more stable leaving the NVIDIA driver alone (described above), changing over to thew new DisplayLink software (uninstall, reboot, then install). It's from the Lenovo site, with Lenovo USB 3.0 dock firmware, and driver to go with it from here, version V10611 http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/guid...DocID=UM014961 But unfortunately, still, about 1 in 5 wake-ups from sleep result in BSOD on Windows 8 64 bit. Re-cap, Windows 7 x64 was stable, with the same BIOS settings, same exact hardware config. I've uploaded the log files for analysis, and please let me know if you need any other information. Thanks! |

Figured I'd post this new info, just in case it gives you any ideas for things I can do to help fix this.
In a few days, I'll backup, then try the DisplayLink cleanup utility, and NVIDIA cleanup. Then reinstall NVIDIA, then Lenovo branded DisplayLink software, and see how it goes. |
