Can you zip and post the contents of the /Library/Application Support/DisplayLink directory - dl.log should show the 1440 resolution otherwise the monitor does not say it's supporting that...

We tested sleeping and haven't seen any problems. Do you have other hardware installed ? As you mention 10.5.7 working and 10.5.8 does not this sounds extremely weird as it would mean it's not...
