From my albeit limited research, eGPUs have been working without the need for drivers, from 10.13.4 Beta 1. This makes it seem like Apple are now adhering to eGPU standards which in turn implies that Display Link hardware works in a proprietary manner.

Somewhat related, the upcoming eGPU support will only work with Thunderbolt 3 Macs i.e. a 2016 or newer MacBook Pro. Applications need to be modified to leverage the eGPU as well.
