I have been working with USB devices using Display Link driver for a couple years now and have constant inconsistent issues.
I have about 30 laptops in my environment. When we needed to go to 3 screens; the laptop, 2nd connected to docking station, we have to find a USB solution for the 3rd screen. Initially we went with the Matrox DualHead2Go Device which worked well, except when we went with screens that flip and with the Matrox we were unable to flip one attached screen without the other. So we went with the IOgear which seemed to be the least expensive and had positive feedback. For the most part they worked, but then I came across a couple of my laptops which would detect the screen but not display. This was random and when I uninstalled and reinstalled it worked for a bit and then stopped. I tried getting support from IOgear and they basically told me they haven't had complaints and that it was probably an incompatability issue between my video driver and the display link..... So I decided to try the Startech although a bit more costly. I tried this on one of my failed IOGear laptops and it worked, so as a machine came up that didn't work with IOgear I changed it for the Startech (BTW using the same Display Link driver). But then a short while later the Startech as well started acting up. I thought perhaps it was an issue with XP, but over the last couple months I changed all my laptops to Windows 7 Enterprise, but still have issues. All in all in the last 12 months, I have constantly been running around inconsistently to laptops to fix them using one of the following methods. 1) I unplug the uSB and plug in a different port. 2) change the DVI wire from the monitor to the USB device. 3) Change the device from Startech to IOGear or IOgear to Startech. Usually one of the above three works, but only for a short while. I am at wits ened, simply because IOGear and Startech take no responsibility because they say it is a Display Link driver. Display Link says they are OEM and the manufacturer needs to support it. Bottom line is I can't find a working solution for my environment. Any help would be greatly appreciated. |
