Cannot install Asus MB168B USB monitor on Ubuntu 16.10 or 16.04

My symptoms are identical. My OS recognizes the monitor and behaves as though it's working (shows up in Displays ), but there's no image on the monitor, and DisplayLink doesn't seem to be running when I run lsusb as described in the tutorial. I have the Asus MB169C+, which should be equivalent to the MB168 in this context. The display uses Thunderbolt 3 over USB-C. This is the second ASUS MB169C+ monitor I've tried so it's unlikely to be an issue with the monitor. I'm running Ubuntu 16.04 on a 2017 XPS 13 (Developer Edition).
