evdi driver installs but apparently not being used

I restarted just now with the DisplayLink device plugged in. Ubuntu recognizes it and is using it as a second monitor.

Then I unplugged the USB cable and plugged it back in, and the computer locked up.

Restarted after the lock up with device plugged in. Again Ubuntu recognizes it and uses it as a second monitor.

Unplugged the USB cable. Computer locks up.

Restarted with device not plugged in. Plugged in device. Screen is black. Can now plug and unplug device without causing computer to lock up. With device plugged in, executed
sudo lshw
and computer locked up while I was examining the output.
