You do know that Linux Mint is based on Ubuntu? That version you installed is based on the last LTS release, 16.04. That and 16.04 still uses Xorg/X11 while 17.10 uses Wayland by default. Disabling wayland on login seems to help as well: https://askubuntu.com/questions/9750...-screen/975188
