New laptop not detecting displays

The MacBook Air with an M2 processor can only support one external display (more details under the 'Display Support' section here --> https://support.apple.com/en-us/111346, and this internal laptop limitation is most likely why you can only get one display to work at a time.

For your reference, DisplayLink technology is a combination of hardware and software. If the hardware you are using does not have DisplayLink technology inside of it, then installing the DisplayLink Manager Application will not change the result.

Is the Macbook Air M2's inability to utilize two displays a downgrade from the previous model? As I mentioned, this worked with my last laptop.

A similar setup functions in my office, albeit using a dock labeled "DisplayLink Plug and Display." This, combined with your advice, implies that I must purchase a DisplayLink dock (or hub?) in order for this to work, even though that may not have been the case with the older laptop...?

You do not mention the brand or model of the 'previous' laptop you were using, so I cannot speak to the differences in behavior.

If the office setup which appears to be using a DisplayLink-based product works as expected, then it confirms that you need a DisplayLink-based solution at home.
