Default Can I use a USB extension cable

I bought a USB 3.0 to HDMI and VGA/DVI Dual-Monitor Adapter External Graphics Converter, Rongyuxuan USB 3.0 to HDMI-VGA-DVI Cable Multi-Display Video Converter Full HD 1920x1080p for Win 7/8/10 Desktop Laptop PC

Using the current 9xx Displaylink driver and I get a signal when attaching the device to either a USB 2.0 or 3.0 port.

The problem is the USB connection cable on the device is very short, maybe four inches. The monitor cable isn't long enough to reach the monitor.

I have a USB 2.0 extension cable, but once attached, there's no USB "connected alert"from Win10, nor is there a signal to the monitor.

Question: Must I use a USB 3.0 extension cable to make the connection?
