Seemingly out of the blue, external display (ASUS 168b+), which had been working fine (apart from the general limitations), stopped working.
Blurred lines appear instead of expected image. On: Mint 20 / 5.4.0-60-generic #67-Ubuntu SMP If I change the resolution to 1024x768, then the display "works" - i.e. it displays things, but of course wrongly. I uninstalled / reinstalled the driver, booted with previous kernel. No luck. Curiously, the system thinks the display is fine, if I take a screenshot, it comes out normally, with the desktop background displayed perfectly/as expected. Any ideas? PS: ~$ dmesg [ 1737.590241] usb 2-1.2: new SuperSpeed Gen 1 USB device number 9 using xhci_hcd [ 1737.610981] usb 2-1.2: New USB device found, idVendor=17e9, idProduct=ff03, bcdDevice=32.11 [ 1737.610986] usb 2-1.2: New USB device strings: Mfr=1, Product=2, SerialNumber=3 [ 1737.610989] usb 2-1.2: Product: MB168B [ 1737.610992] usb 2-1.2: Manufacturer: DisplayLink [ 1737.610994] usb 2-1.2: SerialNumber: XXXXXXXX [ 1744.885135] evdi: [D] evdi_painter_connect:738 (dev=-1) Process is trying to connect [ 1744.885138] evdi: [I] Task 5057 (DesktopManagerE) of process 5050 (DisplayLinkMana) [ 1744.885143] evdi: [D] evdi_painter_connect:788 (dev=1) Connected with 00000000c782aa49 [ 1744.885146] evdi: [D] evdi_detect:90 (dev=1) poll connector state: connected [ 1745.669757] evdi: [D] evdi_detect:94 (dev=0) poll connector state: disconnected [ 1745.669790] evdi: [D] evdi_detect:94 (dev=0) poll connector state: disconnected [ 1745.669909] evdi: [D] evdi_detect:94 (dev=0) poll connector state: disconnected [ 1745.669933] evdi: [D] evdi_detect:94 (dev=0) poll connector state: disconnected [ 1745.670036] evdi: [D] evdi_detect:94 (dev=0) poll connector state: disconnected [ 1745.670060] evdi: [D] evdi_detect:94 (dev=0) poll connector state: disconnected [ 1745.670156] evdi: [D] evdi_detect:90 (dev=1) poll connector state: connected [ 1745.670160] evdi: [D] evdi_painter_get_edid_copy:228 (dev=1) EDID valid [ 1745.670357] evdi: [D] evdi_detect:90 (dev=1) poll connector state: connected [ 1745.670359] evdi: [D] evdi_painter_get_edid_copy:228 (dev=1) EDID valid [ 1746.457607] evdi: [D] evdi_detect:94 (dev=0) poll connector state: disconnected [ 1746.457662] evdi: [D] evdi_detect:94 (dev=0) poll connector state: disconnected [ 1746.457684] evdi: [D] evdi_detect:94 (dev=0) poll connector state: disconnected [ 1746.457750] evdi: [D] evdi_detect:90 (dev=1) poll connector state: connected [ 1746.457755] evdi: [D] evdi_painter_get_edid_copy:228 (dev=1) EDID valid [ 1746.663551] evdi: [D] evdi_painter_dpms_notify:654 (dev=1) Notifying dpms mode: 0 [ 1746.663580] evdi: [D] evdi_painter_mode_changed_notify:701 (dev=1) Notifying mode changed: 1366x768@60; bpp 32; [ 1746.663585] evdi: [D] evdi_log_pixel_format:680 pixel format XR24 little-endian (0x34325258) [ 1746.663588] evdi: [D] evdi_painter_dpms_notify:654 (dev=1) Notifying dpms mode: 0 [ 1747.479228] evdi: [D] evdi_detect:94 (dev=0) poll connector state: disconnected [ 1747.479268] evdi: [D] evdi_detect:94 (dev=0) poll connector state: disconnected [ 1747.479292] evdi: [D] evdi_detect:94 (dev=0) poll connector state: disconnected [ 1747.479321] evdi: [D] evdi_detect:90 (dev=1) poll connector state: connected [ 1747.479325] evdi: [D] evdi_painter_get_edid_copy:228 (dev=1) EDID valid [ 1748.316119] evdi: [D] evdi_detect:94 (dev=0) poll connector state: disconnected [ 1748.316136] evdi: [D] evdi_detect:94 (dev=0) poll connector state: disconnected [ 1748.316145] evdi: [D] evdi_detect:94 (dev=0) poll connector state: disconnected [ 1748.316157] evdi: [D] evdi_detect:90 (dev=1) poll connector state: connected [ 1748.316159] evdi: [D] evdi_painter_get_edid_copy:228 (dev=1) EDID valid Last edited by n1n4; 01-12-2021 at 05:01 PM. I have the exact same issue.
ASUS display on Ubuntu 20.04 - was working the last 6-7 months. All of a sudden it stopped working in the native resolution only showing diagonal blurred / fuzzy lines. When changing to lower resolutions (4:3) it works fine. I reinstalled my computer trying to solve this - so fresh start, but still no luck. Did someone have this and was able to solve it? Thanks! |

Tried the fix with both 5.4 kernel (default in Mint 20.1) and a 5.8.x kernel (via Update Manager). Neither made a difference. Still just blurry lines in correct resolution.

I have tried installing anythingand everything with no luck yet. still the same issue. I have come across scenarios where something would complaing about evdi but it did not do the trick for you so I have little hope but I will try to follow the description from the other thread and report if I have any success.
This is so annoying. My display was working fine for the last 1,5 years and now I am back to only working on my laptop... I hope there will be a solution for this quickly... ![]() |
